Course description:

Since humans have started sending messages, they have looked for ways to protect their messages—whether to safeguard secrets, ensure privacy, or maintain trust. Cryptography, the science of secure communication, has evolved throughout the ages with our need for confidentiality. From ancient ciphers to modern post-quantum encryption, this course explores how cryptographic techniques have developed over the years, driven by technological developments, oftentimes military conflicts, and since the 90s, the internet and thus the hunger for data.

Today, as tech giants live off data available from the internet—including personal information—either to sell for advertisement or to train advanced AI models, the need for privacy and confidentiality has become increasingly important. In this course, we will discover the evolution and inner workings of encryption techniques from the Caesar Cipher to the post-quantum NIST standard Kyber Crystals, and how cryptographic inventions or failures have shaped the course of history. If you are fascinated by riddles and like solving puzzles, bring pen and paper (and maybe a laptop) and join the course for two days of encrypting messages and decrypting them.

Credits can be awarded when completing additional homework, no prior requirements necessary. Course can be given in english, as well as german, depending on the participants’ requirements.

Biography: Christina Plump

Christina Plump ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Arbeitsgruppe Rechnerarchitektur der Universität Bremen und der Abteilung Cyber-Physical System des DFKI Bremen. Seit 2017 unterstützt sie beim Kurs Einführung in die Kryptographie an der Universität Bremen und lehrt unterschiedliche Kurse im Bachelorstudium Informatik. Das Thema Kryptographie fasziniert sie schon seit ihrem Mathematikstudium, welches sie parallel zu ihrem Informatikstudium abgeschlossen hat.
