The Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. (FIBRE) is a non-profit scientific institute specializing in fiber-plastic composites as well as synthetic and natural fibers for technical textiles.

The Monitoring Department conducts research on methods for process and structural monitoring. A wide range of computer science techniques are used in both data processing and experimental implementation. For example, test setups are automated, image and ultrasound data are processed, and machine learning methods are developed and applied.

As part of the excursion, a lecture will first provide an overview of the computer science-related work in the monitoring field. Following this, participants will gain insights into current research and development activities during a guided tour of the institute’s laboratories.

Using state-of-the-art technology, we ensure a reliable and environmentally responsible treatment process. During the guided tour of the Seehausen wastewater treatment plant, you will learn about the various treatment stages the wastewater passes through before it is cleaned and safely returned to the River Weser, becoming part of the natural water cycle once again.

Description: Waste-to-Energy Plant (MKHW)

We operate two waste-to-energy plants in Bremen: the Bremen Waste-to-Energy Plant (MHKW) and the Bremen Medium-Calorific Value Power Plant (MKK). Our plants come into play when waste cannot be avoided or when materials cannot be recycled or reprocessed after their initial use. We ensure that waste—instead of ending up in the ocean or in the ground—is disposed of as climate-friendly as possible through our waste incineration process. With both waste-to-energy plants, we provide a total capacity of more than 800,000 metric tons per year. Our capacity reliably serves more than ten cities and municipalities.

We use the energy released during waste incineration to generate electricity and district heating, which—thanks in part to the district heating pipeline—is a key component of Bremen’s municipal heating plan. At the same time, we ensure that the pollutants released during incineration are safely captured in the flue gas cleaning systems. At the MKK, swb plans to implement Germany’s first carbon capture project at a thermal waste treatment facility. Last but not least, the use of residual materials and the metals they contain helps conserve natural resources.

The Bremen drop tower is a large-scale laboratory that is unique in Europe and offers scientists from all over the world the opportunity to conduct earthbound experiments under short-term weightlessness. In contrast to orbital microgravity research, it can be used permanently and cost-effectively. The 146m high concrete structure on the grounds of the University of Bremen has been in operation since September 1990 and is an important addition to the existing and planned laboratory units for orbital and suborbital microgravity research. Since then, around 400 experiment launches have been carried out continuously each year. The facility makes it possible to achieve a state of weightlessness up to three times a day for 4.74 seconds each time.

In December 2004, a catapult facility was put into operation, which was developed at the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) and creates unique research conditions worldwide. This means that experiments can now be carried out under zero gravity conditions with a flight time of up to 9.3 seconds, with the flight path describing a “vertical” parabola.
