What would this world be like if human activities and products would have a positive impact on people, the environment as well as the economy? What would this world look like without waste? And how do we create products, services and circular processes that make this possible?

The participants are invited to explore the concepts of biomimicry as well as cradle-to-cradle by the means of mini-projects. The process is rooted in the personal experiences of the participants and they are encouraged to utilize them.

As a team the participants develop their own innovative and sustainable product or service as well as a campaign to raise the public's awareness of biomimicry and cradle-to-cradle. In the process they will learn ways to design their own creative business models.

During the whole course participants will discuss the consequences of the biomimicry and cradle-to-cradle concept on their own life and work experience. Backed by this experience they will bring this new way of thinking and operating to their life as well as to their work and universities.

One of the interfaces between medicine and computer science is the post-processing of clinical data using algorithms as well as the development of software programs for the planning and improvement of treatments. Typical requirements in the field of image processing in clinical practice are the identification and measurement of tumor volumes in different organs and at different points in time during treatment. Since time plays an important role in the clinic it is also important to use semi- or automated algorithms instead of manual ones if possible. These algorithms must be presented to the clinicians in an appropriate way. This is why software development is essential in today’s clinical practice.

In this workshop an insight into the work of computer scientists in the field of medical image processing and software development will be given. Moreover a short introduction to the clinical challenges (applications and image processing) as well as to the implementation with Python and visual programming using MeVisLab will be presented. Using this knowledge we will design and implement a software prototype for the planning of a treatment using a basis of software modules for image processing and software development.

In neuroscience we study functions of the human brain, for example as how we perceive our environment or how we learn from it. Techniques like electroencephalography (EEG) allow us to measure neural activity in a non-invasive way while producing large amounts of data. Engineering and informatics tools are often used to analyse EEG data in a quantitative way.

In this course, we will start with a short introduction to neuroscience and human cognition. We will then focus on EEG, a technique which is commonly used for clinical and research purposes. You will learn the basic steps in EEG signal processing, ranging from data pre-processing and de-noising to analysing responses to environmental stimuli.

A large part of this course will consist of practical sessions, where you will first become familiar with Matlab. After this you will form teams of 2-3 people and will work on short projects analysing EEG data. At the end of the course all teams will present their projects to the group.

Athina Tzovara is a post-doctoral researcher in neuroscience at the University of Zurich, in Switzerland. She obtained her PhD in 2012 from University of Lausanne, where she worked on the development of novel electroencephalography techniques for studying neural functions in comatose patients. Her undergraduate studies were in electrical and computer engineering, at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece.
