Since 2011 Bremen has again a hydro-eletric power station. The power station is underground next to the weir and delivers around 39 million kilowatt hours per year. The is enough to supply electricity to about 15.000 households in Bremen – and spares the atmosphere circa 15.000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The station has a capacity of 10 megawatt (MW) and is therefore the biggest tide-dependant run-over-the-river power plant in Germany. The electricity generation changes with ebb and flow.
The station also sets standards regarding ecologic aspects:
It contains a unique, innovative concept for fish protection and the Weser was not impounded but existing possibilities were used in a smart way.
